September in Palermo: a month of culture, art, and entertainment

Palermo, with its millenary history and vibrant cultural life, offers an unmissable calendar of events even in September. From film festivals to photography exhibitions, and from theater performances to music events, the city welcomes both residents and visitors with a rich and varied cultural program.

Sole Luna Doc Film Festival (September 15–21)

From September 15 to 21, the Sole Luna Doc Film Festival celebrates its twentieth edition, bringing to Palermo a selection of international documentaries with strong social and human impact. Screenings will take place in the city’s most evocative locations, such as the Sant’Anna Cloister at the GAM, offering the public a unique cinematic experience. Elliott Erwitt Exhibition at the Royal Palace (until November 30)

Until November 30, the Royal Palace of Palermo hosts a remarkable retrospective dedicated to the renowned photographer Elliott Erwitt. With over 190 iconic shots, including portraits of Marilyn Monroe, John F. Kennedy, and Muhammad Ali, the exhibition offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the art of observing the world with irony and humanity. Visits are available Monday to Saturday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and on Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Admission is €8.50.

Mercurio Festival (August 26 – October 5)

The Mercurio Festival, now in its seventh edition, transforms the Cantieri Culturali alla Zisa into a stage for contemporary performing arts. From August 26 to October 5, the festival offers a series of events spanning theater, music, dance, and visual arts. Highlights not to be missed include:

  • September 10: “Paolo Sorrentino: vieni devo dirti una cosa” by Giuseppe Scoditti
  • September 17: “Giovanna B.” with Genny Petrotta, Angelo Sicurella, and Anais Duran
